Staggering
Instead of doing a book every single month (which can be challenging for some busy members), we have decided to stagger our regular book discussion meetings with a less time-consuming shorter work to discuss: a "lazy girl" selection.
A lazy girls book club selection could be: a magazine article, a short story, an interesting website, a podcast or interview to listen to, or a short piece of childrens literature that deems discussion but is not too long. (If you have something else in mind, just run it by the group.)
So this means that each member will facilitate twice in a row and then be done for the year (easy right?). The "lazy girl" selection comes first and should be submitted before (or at) the meeting prior to your turn to host; the book selection will have already been chosen a few months earlier.
Facilitator
You know you're a facilitator if we are reading your book or lazy girls selection this month!
A facilitator should send a reminder email in advance of her meeting (preferably about two weeks in advance). She should have a few discussion points and/or background information on her selection in case the conversation needs a little encouragement. She should try her best to keep the flow of conversation going and especially make sure that everyone gets a chance to comment.
Non-Facilitators (that's everyone else!)
When you are not facilitating, you should come prepared to contribute to a lively discussion of the reading. Don't be shy to share strong opinions, even if other people disagree! On your turn as a non-facilitator, you also have the supreme calling to contribute a snack -- it needn't be extravagant, just something to share.
Lastly but MOST importantly, if you are unable to attend, you must call or email the facilitator to let her know that you are not coming. The reason for this is we have decided to only cancel a meeting if there are less than three girls in attendance.
Happy reading!
